Big Buts by Gary Ellis

“I do my best…er…well, most of the time.”

“If my life wasn’t so stressful”

“If I wasn’t always so busy…I mean…I’d like to get more involved, BUT…”

Ten Resolutions You Shouldn’t Make This Year

I’m re-posting a recent video, here, by Grant Mullen.  He’s got some pretty good stuff.  This one is very practical and worth the watch.  Btw…for those of you whose computer or connection speed is too slow for video, there isn’t any text today.  Sorry.  But, if you do…it’s worth the less than 3 minute watch:

Morphing Is The Secret

Sometimes a word from the Lord will seem to kind of “sneak up” on you. You can’t exactly place how it came to you…it’s just there. That happened to me with a fresh insight to Romans 12:2, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

I still don’t have much vocabulary to explain it. What I do have is a “mind blower.”

I already knew from previous study that the word “transformed” is the same word as “transfigured” in Matthew 17:2. And it means ‘to change into another form’ (Greek: Metamorphoo). We use the word metamorphosis when describing what happens with a caterpillar that becomes a butterfly.

I “suddenly” realized that Romans 12 is an invitation to do what Jesus did. To realize heaven as more real than earth. In that process there is something spiritually powerful that takes place. It affects us. It transforms us from being mere men to truly heavenly conscious…even more than conscious…our heavenly environment becomes increasingly real. We realize as never before what the Father is doing and saying. We sense it more vibrantly.

To know how this happens we examine the example of Jesus. He was “transfigured” when he went to the place of fellowship with His Father. I believe we can more and more experience through embracing and soaking in His presence. As we do so with His Word, our minds become continually renewed.

2 Corinthians 3:18, “But we all with open face behold as in a glass the glory (goodness) of the Lord are “changed” (transfigured) into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

What things have you discovered have helped you “Morph” (Take on a positive change)?

Help Me Quiet My Mind!

(Select in header or address bar)

Do you struggle with being able to calm your mind?  When you want to focus on hearing from the Lord, do you battle with renegade thoughts? Do you have trouble going to sleep because you can’t turn off your mind?

This may surprise you, but “taking your thoughts captive” is not as complicated as you may be thinking.  Lack of complication doesn’t make it easy, but you’re – more than likely – not a special case :)

Since man is a three part being, let’s take on this battle with our thoughts by separating your thoughts into 3 categories:

  1. Their Business
  2. God’s Business
  3. My Business

Their Business

That’s all the stuff we catch ourselves thinking about that we wish were different about another person (including and not limited to our children, spouses, and friends.)  Any time a thought starts with the words,

  • “They should…”
  • “It would be better if they…”
  • “Why can’t they see that…”

Those are the opening words to thoughts that venture into an arena where you have absolutely no control.  As justified and correct as those thoughts or intentions might be, choose to say to them, “Whoa, Nellie!  Not my business and therefore a waste of mental energy!”  Besides that…where did we get the idea we can successfully live our lives and somebody else’s at the same time?  Plus…that’s egotistical with a capitol “E” to think we know what’s best for someone else when we can’t keep our own lives on track.

Guess what?  You’ve just cleared your brain of 1/3 of the weight that’s been pressing down on you.

God’s Business

That’s the second category that will crush you flat like a bug…cuz you ain’t God.  Only He has the brain power to handle this stuff.  Worrying about wars, famines, the economy, and other things we cannot – in no way – no how – handle or have the wisdom to even sniff around mentally means we’re up in God’s business.  Time to back out gracefully.

Okay…now we’ve just off loaded 2/3 of the weight of our worlds that we have been mistakenly carrying between our shoulders!

My Business

My business is the only category God has given me to deal with.  It will take some practice because we’re too used to being up in God’s and everybody else’s business…even sincerely so.  However, using the three categories to separate out what we’ve been thinking about, will be a great help to experiencing that long desired peace of mind.

Easy Is Over-rated

I liked “easy.”  It was a good friend of mine.  I loved hangin’ out with “easy” and it’s first cousin, “comfortable.”  That was…until I discovered that they lied to me, cheated me, and stole from me.  You see, I also discovered that they were often good entertainment; but they kept me from growing into what my heart desired me to be. Watch the video, and if you find my thoughts helpful, subscribe by RSS or email.  In fact, why not repost on your FB page?  Thanks! ~ Gary

Desired Behavior Change

Most people like change about as much as getting a root canal.  (Just the words sound…<shiver>)  HOWEVER, most people also have things they would like to change in their behavior patterns.  Here’s some solid advise:

A change of habit is essential.  However, changing a habit requires practice.  You have to practice the new habit before you feel it, understand how it works, or “do it right” before that habit will impact your desired behavior change.

Most of us already know the little “change agents” that will move us the right direction. Most of the time we don’t “feel” like it at the moment we need to be practicing it.

So, stop waiting to feel like doing it before you engage the action part. If we wait for the feeling, nothing will probably ever change.  Scientific tests tell us that.  Practice of something must precede the feelings.  Always.  But, practice will usher in the satisfaction of positive change.

Prophetic Evangelism

Throughout the years, there have been many different effective “tools” for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ.  The 4 Spiritual Laws, Evangelism Explosion, Romans Road, just to name a few.  One that is proving to be extremely effective world-wide is something known as Prophetic Evangelism.  The current culture of Western Nations is becoming receptive – no, actually hungering – for the spiritual world.  We as Christians have the opportunity of meeting them on their turf – so to speak – with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit – except in terminology that isn’t religious sounding.  On July 24th and 25th in Davenport, IA, The Sanctuary Revival Center and Midwest Encounters teamed up to invade the annual Bix Jazz Street Fest.  In two days, we were able to communicate the love of God to nearly 750 people.
